At Samuel Merritt University, every student and faculty member has a story about what led them to make that life-changing decision, and what led them to SMU. In this video a few members of the SMU community share their story, with hope to one day to hear or inspire yours.

Come see dance troupe Island Breeze as they perform Polynesian Dances with ukulele and drum! Learn to Hula from the experts! Stay for speaker Loa Niumeitolu! Loa Niumeitolu is a Tongan Pacific Islander writer and community organizer. She holds masters' degrees in English and International Development. She co-founded One Love Oceania, an activist, art and support group for queer Pacific Islander women. She currently facilitates support groups with Filipinos Advancing Justice for Filipina caregivers, and Oyate Tupu'anga, a Native American and Pacific Islander queer group.

She is an ambassador for healing and a voice for those who’ve struggled in search of the past, and continue to struggle through the present. Dr. Joy is the acclaimed author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome — America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: The Study Guide, and her recently published second book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome Part 2: Be the Healing.

Edgar Mendoza, RN is a ‘Nurseonality’ for Scrubs Magazine and was on the talk show, The Doctors. Part of his commitment as a nurse is educating and informing future and current nurses through social media. Currently working and residing in California, he has over five years of critical care experience, trains and precepts new nurses, provides nursing tips about complex body systems, and breaks stereotypical boundaries surrounding underrepresented nurses.
